“You scream, I scream…” You likely know how the rest of the common adage goes. Ice cream is nothing short of wonderful, and with so many non-dairy options available now, even those who have to avoid lactose can enjoy it. Like anything else, if consumed in moderation, ice cream is an enjoyable treat that makes the heart and stomach happy. Plus, regular ice cream is packed full of calcium! However, it’s important to keep in mind that eating too much of it can negatively affect your oral health. Keep reading to learn more.

Ice Cream and Your Oral Health

The next time you enjoy a scoop (or two) of ice cream, you may want to think twice before reaching for a second serving, and here’s why:

High Sugar Content

There’s a reason why ice cream is so tasty – it’s packed full of sugar! On average, half a cup of regular vanilla ice cream contains 14 grams of sugar, without added goodies like chocolate chips, nuts, or flavored syrups that make it so much better. It might taste good in the moment, but if consumed in excess, the sticky sugary substances can cling to your teeth and result in cavities.

Tooth Sensitivity

Millions of people suffer from sensitive teeth for a multitude of reasons. For example, many just have naturally thinner enamel, which leaves the dentin (or soft tissue connected to your nerves) inside of the teeth open to sensitivity. Eating extremely cold ice cream can worsen the effects of tooth sensitivity and make the experience far less enjoyable.

How to Minimize Negative Effects of Eating Ice Cream

The good news is, you don’t have to miss out on the deliciousness of ice cream if you have sensitive teeth. Your dentist can recommend certain dental products that can lessen the effects of tooth sensitivity. You can also help yourself by enjoying it cream with a spoon in a cup or licking it from a cone as opposed to biting into it.

When it comes to sugar content, you can limit the sugary extras that often come with ice cream, such as toppings and sauces. Make sure to be conscious of how much you’re enjoying when you indulge in ice cream. Your teeth and your waistline will thank you!
