1.) Listen to Some Music
A highly effective way for people to find comfort and relief is by listening to their favorite music. Whether it be classical tunes or energetic rock, having something that you can focus on instead can help relieve some anxiety you may have. Ask your dentist if bringing headphones is okay, and then you can hopefully feel better about the whole thing.
2.) Bring a Comfort Item
In a similar vein, you can bring a stress-relieving item with you. Whether it be a small blanket, stress ball, or another object, they can help reduce the apprehension you may feel. You might be more confident getting the treatment you need because of them. Just be sure to talk to your provider about holding or using it while they are working.
3.) Do Breathing Exercises
Your nerves may not start until you are actively sitting in your dentist’s chair. Before you let yourself get worked up, take a second to find a comfortable position. Afterward, take deep breaths and focus on them. You can close your eyes or stare at one point in the room to help ground you.
An exercise that many do is something like breathing in for four counts, holding it for four, and letting it out slowly for six. This actually works on a biological level, signaling to your body that it’s time to relax your muscles.
4.) Bring a Trusted Person
You might be able to feel better about your tooth extraction by knowing you have someone on your side. While your dentist works to make their office a welcoming environment, having a person whom you trust and know can help calm you down. Having a friend, family member, significant other, or anyone else in the waiting room can help you feel more confident, knowing they’re there to help you get home and relax.
